Summary/Abstract: The article presents the concept of a new Christian civilization by Jacques Maritain and Thomistic discussions around it. These debates, thanks to Maritain’s influence on the Second Vatican Council, after the death of the main character themselves, turned into discussions around the “Declaration on Religious Liberty” of Vatican II, which remains the fulfillment of at least some of Maritain’s postulates. Even into the 21st century, the topic remains alive because Pope Benedict XVI called for a reinterpretation of the Second Vatican Council at the beginning of his pontificate. Niche Thomist circles have attempted to justify the “Declaration on Reli- gious Liberty” under the so-called hermeneutics of continuity, which is criticized by the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Pius X, which may pretend to be the bastion of conservative Thomism.
