Contemporary approaches to the assessment of attention

Summary/Abstract: In this paper current approaches to the assessment of attention are presented. The initial discussion focuses on the traditional methods of clinical assessment: psychometric tests which provide indirect information about attention, specific neuropsychological tests of attention and direct behavioral observation and measurement. CNS evoked-potential correlates of attention are also reviewed. At the end, a new experimental assessment method, incorporating the concept of attention within the framework of Information Processing Theory and Sternberg's Additive Factor Method, is discussed. On the basis of recent research it is argued that the so called paradigmatic approach is a promising approach to the assessment of attention deficits.
