Language of novel "Mirisi, zlato i tamjan" as a scene of contrasts

Summary/Abstract: World created in the novel Mirisi, zlato i tamjan is built on several major oppositions: an opposition between the present time and the past time, the opposition between the Island and the City, the opposition between an individual and the system, between private and public, between a play and a real life, between communication and isolation, between an old age and youth. All those oppositions are refl ected in the relationship between two main characters in the novel: Madona Markantunova and Mali. The language that was created for the sake of that novel is compliant to the world of that novel and complementary with it. It’s because the world of Novak’s novel is in a certain meassure created by the language by which it was written. It is a two way process: the language creates the world presented in the novel and the world of the novel creates the language as well. The language of the novel, as well the novel in general, is based on many opposing forces and the most important of all is the opposition between the standard stokavian language system and dialectal chakavian language system with the addition of the Italian language elements. The purpose of this paper is to show how the language created by Slobodan Novak in his novel creates the world of that novel, i. e. what is the idioms’ distribution in the novel like, what causes the idioms’ distribution and what is its meaning and a literary purpose in the novel.
