Summary/Abstract: Following the history of utopia, we can see that its literary form always expresses a critical attitude in relation to the current social order. The beginning of the formal genre of utopian literature was the publication of Thomas More’s Utopia in 1516. More’s work partly continues the tradition of older texts that, since ancient times, have tried to define the principles of an ideal social community. The paper analyses the concept of individual and religious freedom in More’s Utopia, trying to show how much this freedom is limited, controlled, and in the service of maintaining the stability of the social order. Such a concept is open to criticism because, among other things, it allows only a limited measure of personal decision-making.
