Summary/Abstract: The appointment of a government led by Lascăr Catargiu in March 1871 provoked the most violent attacks on the person of Prince Carol. It was practically the peak moment of the anti-dynasty movements, a moment which also meant a resettlement of the political groups in the framework established in 1866. As an experienced politician, Catargiu assumed the task of taking over the leadership of a government in the context of some days that could mean the abdication of the prince and the start of a crisis. In order to govern, the new prime minister had to rely on a strong Chamber of Deputies. The debates that occurred as a result of the appointment of the chief of staff, proved the exact opposite. Faced with this situation, Catargiu was forced to resort to new elections in order to obtain the necessary support, as it was customary at the time. Organized according to the already known scenario, but somewhat calmer than the previous ones, the elections provided the much-desired result of the conservatives and also showed the crushing defeat suffered by the opponents.
