Summary/Abstract: The present paper deals with the problem of translation of phraseological units from German into Bulgarian and Russian. The main issue is the kind of translation achieved by phraseological or by non-phraseological translation. The paper accepts the postulate of the theory of translation, that a good translation of a phraseological unit has to be transferred predominantly by the use of another one. Moreover, the communicative value, the style, expressiveness and the historical-cultural background have to be also taken into account in order for a translation of an idiomatic expression to sound as an ordinary expression in the target language. Another topic in the paper concerns the quality of the functional equivalence which doesn’t have to be a phraseological one.
