Summary/Abstract: The poetry of the Italian Nobel Prize winner Salvatore Quasimodo was translated into Bulgarian by the poet Dragomir Petrov during the socialist 60’s when such an elitaristic and introspective style seemed suspicious and led to inconvenient comparisons with the translator’s own poetry. How did this affect the cultural debates in Bulgaria and the poetic destiny of a really talented poet and translator? The answer reveals the complicated situation of the non-canonical literary workers and the ways to cope with it through translation.
