Summary/Abstract: The issue of hierarchical structure of the Church was one of the main academic interests of Cardinal Stanisław Nagy SCJ. The article attempts a systematic and at the same time critical evaluation of his research in this field. The paper adopts the following structure: first, the historical and theological context of Nagy’s reflection has been presented; then method he used, the concept of the Church he assumed and the problem of the Church’s genesis have been pointed out. Three further themes are directly related to the hierarchical structure of the Church: apostolate, succession and papal primacy. Finally, the question of the importance of the ecclesiastical hierarchy in the life of the Church and the relationship of the hierarchical priesthood to the universal priesthood of all believers has been posed.
