Summary/Abstract: The War of Independence in 1877, followed by the Treaties of San Stefano and Berlin in 1878, gave Romania the status of a free state. The country begins a new stage by trying to make its way alongside Western powers. The 510 letters that are part of the volume, exchanged by Romanian diplomats after the war, in the year 1883, give evidence of how much the Romanian diplomatic missions have struggled to renew with the countries of the West, the French language having an important place in the foreign policy of the Romanian state about to be formed.
