Summary/Abstract: This paper is a sociolinguistic analysis of first names dynamics in Rona de Sus, Maramureș County, a Ukrainian village in the north of Maramureș County, Romania, on the border with Ukraine. The aim of this paper is to illustrate the relationship between tradition and innovation at the anthroponymic level, the identification of the role of migration in the modernization of the onomasticon of Rona de Sus and to analyse the sociolinguistic mechanisms underlying the choice of names. The corpus of the paper consists of the names of children born between 1990–2000, extracted from the parish registers of baptized persons and from the Civil Status Registers. Births, which contain, especially after the year 2000, transcripts of birth certificates of children born abroad. Based on the interdisciplinary analysis of first names, this paper examines the change of Slavic names (Hafia, Liuba, Miroslava, Vasilena; Fedor, Miroslav, Serioja, Volodea) with Romanian and modern names (Alesia, Bianca, Denisa; Florin, Ionuț), the role of the hagionyms and the predominant types of names, according to structure, origin and semantics, the frequency of Ukrainian traditional names.
