Summary/Abstract: Civilian labourers worked alongside the prisoners both in the Auschwitz Concentration Camp and in the mines and steel mills of the branch camps. As a rule, they were employed through private companies. They came from Germany, the allied states of the Third Reich, and the occupied countries. In the fi rst period, mainly professionals were employed, later also unskilled workers. The conditions of their housing and food were usually disastrous. They often helped prisoners, mainly by providing food and medicine. Some of them belonged to underground organisations.
