Summary/Abstract: The paper presents the development and evolution of criminal authority figures called vory v zakone in the Soviet Union and Russia. It shows the unique characteristics of their activities both in penitentiary institutions and at large. The purpose of this paper is to show the conditions for the formation and transformation of vory v zakone in historical and modern Russia and their current situation. The analyses carried out have led to the belief that over the 100 years since the emergence of this group, despite the transformation of the socio-economic and political system in Russia, vory v zakone continues to occupy a dominant position in the world of organized crime. Even though they do not follow many long-established restraining moral principles, they successfully achieve their goals.
