Summary/Abstract: This article explores the links between the Church’s evangelizing mission Ad gentes and the 12-Step programme of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) as two ways for the renewal and development of spiritual life. It discusses the stages of evangelization defined in the decree Ad Gentes of the Second Vatican Council. The similarity between Christian witness and the conversation with an addicted person as practised by AA members is shown. The kerygma phase has many similarities with the first three steps in the AA programme. The catechumenate phase has no direct counterpart in the 12-Step program. The Ad gentes model does not directly address the issues discussed in steps 4-9 of AA. The pastoral care of the faithful phase has a close correspondence to the last three steps of AA. In conclusion, the analysis shows that there are significant links between the AA 12-Step programme and the Catholic Church’s mission of Ad gentes as two ways for the renewal and development of spiritual life.
