Summary/Abstract: More than 130 years ago (1889) Paulina and Antoinette Benda founded the first educational institution with piano studies in varna, Bulgaria, namely “Institute of Music, Pianoforte and French Language” (“Institut de Musique, Piano-forte et de la Langue Francaise”). It taught French to girls of various nationalities living in the city. Historically, the work of the Benda sisters is an interesting and significant event related to the prehistory of piano teaching traditions in Bulgaria. The article focuses on the contribution of this institute to musical culture in the city of varna (as well as Bulgaria) in the late 19th century and the following decades.
