Summary/Abstract: The years 1918–1922 were critical for Slovak history. All the important events of this period were more or less signally reflected in Slovak districts. The origin of Czechoslovakia was rather slow in the Zvolen district; it was characterised by the establishment of local national committees and national guards, the de-Hungarisation of public life, and the activation of Slovak political and cultural life. A short yet intense military conflict with the Hungarian republic significantly disturbed this revivalist process during which the Zvolen district was occupied for almost a month. A great number of selfless and idealist Czech officers, policemen, teachers, and other employees gave a notional helping hand during the reconstruction of post-war life and implementation of Czechoslovakia in real life. Without their help, the post-war transformation would have been practically impossible. But cultural and mental differences as well as the freedom of expression and awoken nationalism on the Slovak side paved the way for the birth of the essential internal political tension of the Czechoslovak Republic with the contradicting concepts of Czechoslovakism and autonomism.
