Summary/Abstract: Shortly after the rift in the social democratic party, regional structures of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia (KSČ) were built up, including the Hron Region in Central Slovakia. The KSČ organisations were mostly established in towns where unemployment increased and the standard of living deteriorated as an aftermath of the post-war economic recession. Their establishment and increase was conditioned by the social crisis and the criticism of social democrats who, in the eyes of the communists, failed to solve the issues related to unemployment and the decline of living standards. The article addresses the split of local social democratic party structures, the establishment of local KSČ organisations, the vying of the two for voters, the analysis of election results, and the social characteristic of the members.
