Summary/Abstract: The use of information technology has greatly changed the distribution, accumulation and knowledge management. What was left unchanged is that the knowledge needs to be organized and presented regardless of the medium in which it is written. In that process metadata have an irreplaceable role, they are becoming increasingly important for the identification and management of educational material, so without them, learning management systems might not even work. The aim of this paper is to present the metadata for tagging educational materials, and to compare them in order to present their advantages and disadvantages. Particular attention will be paid to the following standards: Learning Object Metadata - LOM, IMS Learning Resource Metadata, set of metadata elements in the Dublin Core - DCMI and Sharable Content Object Reference Model (SCORM). After summarizing the results, we will give an answer to the question why some metadata for tagging objects are imposed more than others and why the library community accepted them.
