Summary/Abstract: This paper investigates the trade-off between rigor and relevance in management research. It provides an overview of theoretical stances on rigor and criteria used in functionalist and interpretative paradigms to assess it. Relevance is connected to the user, be it an academic or a manager. Further on, using literature reviews it points out to an apparently decreasing level of rigor both in quantitative and qualitative studies. In conclusions it identifies some pitfalls to avoid in further research: statistical power-rigor trade off, poor construct quality and the obsession to measure.
