Summary/Abstract: The comparative consolidation attractiveness of the banking sector in the EU is the starting point for assessing the effectiveness of bank capital concentration. Its detection has been achieved through the application of a newly built model based on a criterion catalogue derived from the scientific literature, and from an empirical study which has been conducted in the period August-September 2020. The research scope includes the survey of M&A banking specialists from the largest credit institutes in Bulgaria, United Kingdom and the DACH region (Austria, Germany and Switzerland), experts from the so-called big four consulting firms (Deloitte, Ernst & Young, PricewaterhouseCoopers and KPMG), as well as representatives of strategic consulting such as McKinsey & Company and Boston Consulting Group from the above-mentioned countries. The final results certify the high consolidation attractiveness of the Bulgarian banking system. At the same time, the fields with the need for immediate measures are not only related to the banking business model itself, but also to the overall infrastructure, demographic development, corruption, state risk, and the rule of law.
