Comparative Analysis Of The Economic Development Of Rural Areas In Bulgaria In The Context Of The Leader Approach

Summary/Abstract: The article aims to analyze the state and problems in the development of rural areas in Bulgaria. The characteristics of the rural areas in Bulgaria are considered - the demographic tendencies, the employment and the incomes, the level of unemployment, the incomes from the sales of the enterprises. A comparative analysis of the municipalities applying the Leader approach as an effective instrument of the EU Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) for sustainable rural development in Northern and Southern Bulgaria is performed. Conclusions are presented on the territorial impact of the Leader approach as a unique opportunity to build sustainable local capacity with the aid of local action groups (LAGs) to improve the quality of life in rural areas through the implementation of local development strategies.
