The Rural World in Ex-Libris

Summary/Abstract: Images linked to the rural world often appear in ex-libris. This article attempts to clarify who were the ex-libris owners who had chosen rural life images as defining images for their ex-libris. Moreover, we analyse the meaning of the concept of “rural” and the significant changes of the rural community. The second part of the article points out the most important topics of the rural life depicted in ex-libris. We conclude that the images of ex-libris do not represent a close reflection of the rural world. They are rather an ideal and idyllic image through the lenses of the privileged social categories, of those who owned libraries in villages.
