Summary/Abstract: The article analyses the role and symbols of Masonic ex-libris in the historical and cultural context of Freemasonry. Ex-libris, personalized labels affixed to books to indicate ownership, were used by Freemasons to communicate their membership and beliefs, often through esoteric symbols recognized only by initiates. Throughout history, Freemasonry has been shrouded in mystery, being associated as much with political influence and revolutions as with acts of charity. Masonic symbols such as the all-seeing eye, the square and the compass, are incorporated into ex-libris, reflecting the founding myths of Freemasonry, linked to the builders of Solomon's Temple and the Templar Knights, or later, the guilds of medieval cathedral builders. The article presents some significant examples of ex-libris that belonged to Freemasons or Masonic lodges.
