Summary/Abstract: The present paper is an attempt to identify and analyze the points of conflict in Gottlob Frege’s and Saul Kripke’s accounts of proper names. My purpose is to show that despite Kripke’s critique, Frege’s account seems tenable, and a new interpretation of it will be offered in support of this. It will be also suggested that in spite of these differences there may be some important points of agreement which might be regarded as providing common ground for a new perspective on proper names. The conclusions advanced will be that proper names are rigid but not direct designators, and that we should distinguish between two Fregean senses similar to the program-algorithm division proposed by Yannis Moskovakis.
