Summary/Abstract: The current studia presents the conducted research of the orientation of two temples from the period of 9th-10th centuries – the monastery of Ravna and the monastery of Patleyna. Both monasteries were important centers in the First Bulgarian kingdom and are located near the capital of Preslav. The geodesic azimuths of both buildings were measured, detailed survey was conducted of their position on the terrain and a survey was performed of the archaeological monuments in their close proximity. The results can serve as eventual motives for their orientation. In both cases the characteristics of the terrain have not affected the orientation of the temples. Both monasteries are oriented towards the direction from which the sun rises as it did on the day of their patron saints. The temple of Ravna is not at all oriented towards the direction of the sunrise but rather towards a rock-cut pagan sanctuary. The monastery of Patleyna is not oriented towards the direction of the sunrise as it was on the day of the supposed patron saint Panteley. It is oriented towards the direction from which the sun rises on two important Christian holidays – St Dimitri’s Day and Candlemas.
