Summary/Abstract: On the basis of unpublished archival documents and little-known materials from the Bulgarian and the German press, the article follows the efforts of a group of independent patriotic Bulgarian intellectuals, led by the famous Gabrovo merchant and patron of the arts Botyo Barakov, to support the government of the Fatherland Front in its attempts to overcome the international isolation imposed on Bulgaria after the end of World War II. The paper discusses the operation of the Society for Culture and Art established to that end and the trials and tribulations along the way of its official establishment in the new public and political situation after September 9, 1944. Special attention is paid to the largest, interesting and with a topical ring even today initiative of the Society — to create (by a German idea) a floating international SHIP OF ARTS as a “temple and symbol of new mankind”, of mutual understanding and intensive cultural exchange between the nations.
