Summary/Abstract: Natural catastrophes, which occur in different parts of the world, result in increasingly more extensive damage both to people and their property. This is, among other things, due to the fact that the areas affected by an increased risk of such catastrophes are inhabited by more and more people, and, at the same time, the value of destroyed infrastructure is on the rise. What is also important is the cli- mate change caused by wasteful exploitation of the natural environment by human activity. Although scientists keep arguing about the origin of the greenhouse effect, it is undoubtedly a fact, and its con- sequences lead to enormous losses. Catastrophic phenomena of natural origin – especially over the last decades – have been increasingly frequently affecting Poland. Losses caused by such elements as floods, hurricanes, tornadoes and landslides have been particularly severe. For this reason, opinions according to which there is a need to implement systemic solutions thanks to which it would be possi- ble to minimize financial consequences of these disasters are more and more common. Undoubtedly, insurance instruments should be one of the elements of the planned solution. This study is a synthetic description of catastrophic phenomena in Poland and a starting point for further research in this area, whose results will be published in the subsequent editions of „Wiadomości Ubezpieczeniowe”.
