Summary/Abstract: In the context of a gradual increase of health care costs, new solutions in financing health care are becoming more and more important. Medical savings accounts are a relatively new form of financing health care, and they enable individuals to save up in order to cover costs of health care services. Due to the lack of risk sharing, the coverage of very high health care costs should be ensured separately as part of the public system (insurance or supplyingones) or by means of private health insurance. From a theoretical point of view, the idea of medical savings accounts helps reduce moral hazard present in health care insurance sys- tems, as well as gives an opportunity to meet future challenges related to demographic trends. The article presents the idea of medical savings accounts and later discusses previous experience of selected countries (USA and Singapore) with using this method of financing health care services. Furthermore, the possibility of using medical savings accounts in health care systems of European countries has been mentioned.
