Summary/Abstract: The paper brings a reflection on a role of a writer and intellectual, in general, especially on his attitude to politics, power, ideology, and, last but not least, to war events, based on the example of the Manifesto of Czech writers, published on May 22, 1917, along with a variety of foreign analogies. The author’s theses are documented with actual quotes from works of Czech writers.
