Summary/Abstract: This article proposes a new perspective for the analysis of the painting techniques used for mural decorations in Romanian wooden churches. On the one hand, it presents the theoretical aspects of tempera painting tradition, and clarifies the term “distemperpaint”. On the other hand, it offers brief overviews of the features of the main painting materials that were identified, as well as of their specific deterioration and alteration phenomena, an information that was collected from the available specialized literature. Didactic in great extent, this text creates the background for future discussions and aims at bringing to the attention of less experienced restorers and conservators some basic facts, such as the main characteristics of the painting materials used in Romanian wooden churches. The final result is a general overview of the existing data on the painting techniques of mural paintings in Romanian wooden churches.
