Summary/Abstract: The emergence of a painting by Modigliani, not yet known, led to the development of a program of scientific investigations to evaluate whether the materials used could be compatible with those used by Modigliani and whether the execution technique could be attributable to that of the unfortunate painter of Livorno. The campaign of diagnostic investigations lasted for almost three years, also having the opportunity to experiment with new diagnostic applications on paintings on canvas; the results of the work presented here return data completely favorable to the attribution of the painting to the hand of Modigliani. The difficulties in tackling the study of the painting arose from the fact that a fairly invasive restoration carried out in the 1970s substantially modified the originality of the work; the possibility given today by scientific instruments to see beyond the surface has given the owners the courage to face a large-scale diagnostic campaign to resolve the question of the authenticity or otherwise of the work.
