Summary/Abstract: Ethnic minorities within the working class in pre-World War I Romania has not been an important research topic. Romanian historians during communism wrote extensively on the topic of the working class, but the question regarding the ethnic minorities among the workers was not among them. The main tendency during communism was to highlight class unity and to gloss over the various divisions therein. Romanian social-democracy tried to attract as many workers as possible within its ranks. Believing that their numbers would swell as a consequence of industrialization, social-democrats hoped that their actions and propaganda would bring the workers closer to the movement. Despite this, an important part of the working class was not ethnically Romanian, some being foreign citizens while others were Romanian-born Jews that had no political rights. The lack of quick results demoralized some workers and this would lead to splits within Romanian social-democracy. Using a wide variety of sources, such as the press, statistical data, memoires written by early socialists and documents from the archives, we can create a modern perspective on this under researched topic.
