Summary/Abstract: Sibiu played an important role in the history of the Saxons and Romanians fromTransylvania as a political, economical and cultural center during the second half ofthe 19th century. While the abovementioned aspects are rather widely studiedthroughout the years, the organizations and the activities of a rather new social classare not well known. Workers organizations appeared as a consequence of the neweconomical and political conditions brought by industrialization and the Ausgleichand by studying them we can have a better view regarding the social composition ofthe city and some examples of dissatisfaction that this new class had. Similar to mostof the European continent, Sibiu’s social-democrats relied upon the socialist partyand the trade unions, although non socialist organizations also existed. Althoughthose organizations were not always successful in achieving their goals, they areimportant because it helps historians to better understand the social fabric of a citysituated at the empire’s periphery.
