Summary/Abstract: The aim of this paper is to analyze the basic concepts and principles of religious education in Europe and to demonstrate the Czech concept of RE within the European context. Religious education is a subject with a dynamic development, which transcends all definitions. It is essential to take into account the specifics of every society, historic, social and academic context of every country. There was an interruption of religious education in some countries due to historic events and the subject has not been successfully reintroduced into the national educational system yet. Some countries prefer traditional catechetic concept and fail to modernize it, other countries prefer inter-confessional concept like in religious studies, yet other countries are developing ecumenical or interreligious concepts.
