Summary/Abstract: The economic and social development of a country and its regions is directly affected by the labour market situation and particularly by employment and unemployment. The paper addresses the labour market situation in the Visegrad countries (The Slovak Republic, The Czech Republic, Poland and Hungary). We have researched the development of the employment, unemployment rate and long-term unemployment rate in order to delineate similarities and differences among the regions in these countries. In the paper a region is defined as a territorial unit corresponding with NUTS II. We use the method of time series analysis, comparison, synthesis and statistical methods. The differences in the employment rate in the regions of V4 are quite large and during the period have not changed significantly. The regional disparities in unemployment rate and long-term unemployment rate decreased until 2008, and then they increased slightly as a result of the economic recession. Overall, the best situation is on the labour market in the regions of the Czech Republic. The unemployment in the regions of Hungary was initially quite favourable but has gradually increased. On the contrary, the observed labour market indicators have improved in Poland. The unemployment rate in the Slovak Republic is one of the highest in Europe with the exception of The Region of Bratislava.
