Summary/Abstract: The nature and status of the social dimension of economic development is currently the subject of hot debates and professional controversies, which range from a complete negation of social issues and its reduction only on the level of social disasters to the practice strongly inclining to social engineering. The disadvantage of these escalated approaches is the fact that they often lack functioning and positive understanding of social policy as a scientific discipline with particular theoretical and practical dimensions. The aim of the article is to summarize and evaluate the significance and meaning of social policy in modern society on the basis of the relevant literature, with regard to the reality of the Czech discourse on social policy and its importance in social practice. Thus the article tries to draw the attention to the important concepts of social policy and their roles in the creation and evaluation of individual areas of the national economy, affecting the quality of life and opportunities for the development of human potential.
