Early recorded music from Bulgaria: cultural dialogues, transfers and metamorphoses

Summary/Abstract: The article offers for the first time a comprehensive and documentary based look at the earliest recordings of military bands in Bulgaria in the first decades of the twentieth century. It examines catalogues of the Gramophone Company and its local representatives, gramophone records and secondary sources (memoirs, press publications). The focus of the study is the recordings of the Music of the Guards Band. On the basis of a description of the recording sessions and the repertoire recorded on catalogues and records, some functions of historical recordings as expressions of cultural dialogues and transmissions in the recorded repertoire are sketched: trajectories between foreign and own, European and local, modern and traditional.
