Summary/Abstract: The crucial importance of knowledge makes organisations work with knowledge deliberately and systematically. Nowadays this „care“ about knowledge can be achieved best due to communities of practice. These communities are one of the tools to create, share and manage knowledge. This article presents various definitions of these communities and points out their importance and benefits. It also defines knowledge and knowledge management. This paper also focuses on the integration of communities of practice to the organisational structure of DaimlerChrysler and British Petroleum.
