Brazilian Cinema Novo – structuring the ideological corps

Summary/Abstract: The formation of the conceptual platform of the Brazilian Cinema Novo is a complex pro-cess related to the construction of a new national identity. Future filmmakers perceive themselves as continuators of the radical ideas of Brazilian modernism. Their work is influenced by neorealism and the French New Wave, but also by high examples of the national film heritage, such as the work of Umberto Mauro and the remarkable film “Limite” by Mário Peixoto. They acknowledge two great critics, Paulo Emilio Salles Gomes and Аlex Viany, and the iconic figure of Nelson Pereira dos Santos as their predecessors and “fathers”.
