Summary/Abstract: In this article, the authors explore the issue of civic guards, i.e. volunteer and sometimes spontaneously organized groups of residents of auxiliary character in ensuring public safety. Based on historical experience, the authors present selected instances of the use of such guards, as well as discuss Poland’s legal solutions in this regard. In the following part of the article, the possibilities of using civic guards in ensuring public order, including in patrolling activities and protection of various types of objects, as well as the dangers arising from possible abuses in the use of powers by members of the civic guards are presented.
