Summary/Abstract: The purpose of undertaken considerations is to exhibit axiological status of art, modern art in particular, against cultural transition of values. Dangers of ongoing transformation of values on global and European scale were pointed out. Attempts of counteracting those adverse changes of values have been presented. One course of the research is a reference to the permanent values of European culture constituting achievements of many generations. Another direction is determination of values, that can be accepted in multicultural world. The common good is proposed as an axiological universe. The axiological potential of art in Polish pedagogy theory is shown in the context of contemporary problems. It is incorporated in presenting art as an autotelic value and in updated educational values. Changes in the field of art education have been considered, including modern, popular and net-art. The concepts of art from postmodern philosophy present in pedagogical interpretation were recalled, which emphasizes value of understanding oneself and the world through art. Due to the dual potential of art in pedagogy, it can constitute axiological universe for 21st-century education.
