Summary/Abstract: Many countries will increasingly encounter uncertainty and formidable barriers in achieving the goal, but at the same time, horizons for pooling resources, knowledge and efforts to address fundamental problems will open up before them – those accompanying our human progress and those arising from development itself and threatening the common well-being.The main goal of this article is to trace the process of the emergence and formation of the concept of sustainable development and to highlight the main initiatives that shape and develop it.
