Summary/Abstract: František Helwin was one of junior army officers with experiences of Czechoslovak Legions who were responsible for adequate training and equipment schooling of military units in the interwar Czechoslovakia. His experience with gendarmerie service from the time before World War I predestined him to become one of commanders in the newly formed State Defence Guard units consisting of members of several law enforcement agencies (including army and gendarmerie). This Guard was intended to defend the state border. Helwin was entrusted with command of one of the most exposed battalions that took part in exhausting fighting with Henlein terrorists. Nazi occupation brought Helwin to involvement in resistance activities, yet, as it seems, apart from gathering basic information and formation of network of collaborators, he did not manage anything else before getting arrested, sentenced and executed.
