Summary/Abstract: The present study would like to highlight several fundamental aspects of what we mean today by “suffering”, considered in two forms. Confession and martyrdom, these two great directions of the Christian mission, have been and will forever remain authentic means of assuming the mystery of the Holy Cross. In our time no one is exempt from suffering. Minimized by the human will thanks to the progress of science or attenuated by the promise of reward in the world beyond, suffering, as an expression of crucified love (see 1 Corinthians 2, 2) can be for us, the people of our day, a way of living in acute proximity to reality. It depends, however, on our availability and openness to this love – a life lesson that we learn constantly, again and again.
