Summary/Abstract: The Jesuits’ Society of Jesus was set up in order to defend the Pope’s throne and catholicism against kings and religious heresies. An extremely efficient organization, it played an important role also in the cultural development at that time. It spread towards the East and Far East making prozelytes and becoming in some instances indispensable for the rulers’ courts. Nevertheless, the perfect Jesuit mechanism started slowly to fail and the order was banned from countries and regions where they had apparently been highly successful. Even the Jesuit Eldorado – Paraguay – collapsed from within.
