The Story of Joining EU – Between Greatness and Clumsiness

Summary/Abstract: It is perhaps necessary a certain distance in time – while passions that still alter an objective opinion die away – in order to properly analize what joining the EU really means for Romania. The sense of belonging to Europe has been fundamentally accompanied like a shadow by the sense of difference. Hope and disappointment have marked Romania’s efforts to be accepted in the union of the European states. The stages of the joining process, the image of Europe in the collective conscience of the Romanian people and the obstacles that Romania had to overcome in order to become a EU member are the topic of the present essay.
