National hero Avram Iancu – Controversial Aspects

Summary/Abstract: This text, on the occasion of the bicentennial of Avram Iancu’s birth, sheds light on less-known and controversial aspects of the national hero’s biography, especially concerning the last 20 years of his life, marked by disillusionment, introspection, and depression stemming from the unfulfi llment of the ideals for which he fought. Nonetheless, for the common people, Iancu remained until death the Prince of the Mountains, a true legendary figure. Even contemporary Romanian elites have not hesitated to present Iancu as one of the most important leaders of his time, committed to social and national ideals, a personality deserving a place in the Romanian national pantheon.
