Summary/Abstract: Based on a manuscript discovered by the author in French archives, the following article follows the pattern opened many years ago by the historian Maria Holban. The manuscript consists of some statistical notes and other personal observations taken by this soldier in the Napoleon’s army in its way to east. He mainly refers to the Romanian Principalities of Walachia and Moldavia, praising the latent potential of the countries, at the same time explaining their backwardness by references made to the intrusion of Ottoman Empire in the designation of corrupts Phanariot princes. Judging its source systematically, Sorin Şipoş explains the inconsistencies of the text through the later recording of the gathered data in a full compact text, while the considerable amount of information regarding the geographical, demographic or the politic are considered to reflect, the special attention this traveler thought necessarily to pay to this areas.
