MENTIONS OF THE USE OF GREEK FIRE ON THE DANUBE AND SAVA

Summary/Abstract: The paper discussed two passages from the one of the most important medieval Hungarian chronicles The Illuminated Chronicle: Chronicle of the Deeds of the Hungarians from the Fourteenth century. Both of them are dedicated to the Byzantine—Hungarian wars and two battles on the river Sava and on Danube. The battle at the river Sava was fought in 1071 somewhere around possession named Buzijaš, which is in Syrmia. The second one, that on the Danube river occurred in 1128 by the very important fortress of Haram or Hram. In the first one, even though the Greek fire was used, the Hungarians managed to win. On the other hand, thanks to the use of the Greek fire, in 1128 the Byzantines destroyed the Hungarian navy. The paper also examines the importance and relevance of these data that were almost not at all used and commented so far in the scholarly circles and represent a valuable contribution to the military history of both Byzantium and Hungary.
