Summary/Abstract: The story of the Jewish Museum in Prešov (Epeges) is different from the establishment of other Jewish museums in Czechoslovakia and elsewhere in Europe. The Prešov museum was not set up either in the capital of the country (as in Prague), or in the former central seat of the provincial council of Jewish communities (as in Mikulov), but in a relatively small town of the Šariš district in eastern Slovakia, in a region of many small rural, orthodox Jewish communities still living a very traditional life. It was a happy chance that led to its establishment and the devoted work of a single enlightened man who understood the importance of documentation of Jewish folk culture precisely in such an environment.
