Summary/Abstract: This article presents a historical source in the form of prayer letters addressed to the Kalwaria Zebrzydowska Sanctuary. The author focuses on the religiosity of the writers. Firstly, the article provides an overview of the history of the Bernardine sanctuary. Secondly, it examines the territorial origin of the correspondents. Thirdly, it highlights the specific nature of the prayer requests during the Gomułka era, followed by a similar analysis of the Gierek era. The supplicatory letters mainly document daily life and express religious fervor. The larger political history is mentioned briefly, such as references to Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński and the Millennium of Christianity, as well as the subsequent election of a Polish pope. The article relies on sources that document religious culture prior to the emergence of the phenomenon known as the “Papal Calvary”.
